Ten Poems from Ireland

Paula Meehan’s selection of ten landmark poems for Candlestick Press miraculously encompasses Ireland’s myth, folklore and recent history, alongside enduring themes of childhood, love and ageing.

There are poems about ‘The Troubles’ and about what it means to be Irish, as well as poems about the country’s bi-lingual heritage. These are poems that speak plainly and with a directness that will appeal to every reader. We think we can guarantee that both seasoned readers and newcomers to Irish poetry will find plenty to relish in this selection.

“She was a song that nobody sings.
She was a house ransacked by soldiers.
She was a language seldom spoken.
She was a child’s purse, full of useless things.”
— from ‘Death of an Irishwoman’ by Michael Hartnett

Paula Meehan has published seven award-winning collections of poetry, which have been translated into many languages. She was Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2013-2016 and lives in Dublin.

Poems by Eavan Boland, Moya Cannon, Tony Curtis, Michael Hartnett, Brendan Kennelly, Gearóid MacLochlainn, Thomas McCarthy, Paula Meehan, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Leanne O’Sullivan.
The pamphlet is dedicated to the memory of John Montague.

The ‘Instead of a Card’ poetry pamphlets make perfect presents – unusual, beautiful, worthwhile and definitely not for throwing away.

They come with an envelope and bookmark left blank for your message. Interesting and enjoyable to read, they make an excellent introduction to the work of contemporary and historical poets.

Pony Review

Jeremy Corkery has left a new comment on your post "Pony Book Launch":

Here in East Asia for the past 65 years, memories of the west come flooding back. The language does wonders for my imagination. I treasure every line. The pony sybolises so much for me. I love the sketches.

This will be my treasured vade mecum to the end of my days.

Sincerest thanks and appreciation and God bless

Poem and a Pint, Coronation Hall, Ulverston 9/2/2013

Poem and a Pint, Coronation Hall, Ulverston 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

An evening of poetry and music in the Coro’s Supper Room with two outstanding performers: poet Tony Curtis, a member of Aosdána, the Irish association of creative artists, winner of the Poetry Ireland/Friends Provident National Poetry Competition, the Book Stop Poetry Prize and 2003 recipient of the Varuna House Exchange Fellowship to Australia; and Ulverston guitarist Matt Cowe.

Tony Curtis (pictured left) is self-deprecating and very funny. He tells a story and a joke like the best sort of stand-up and he shimmers with Irish charm. His most recent collection, Folk (2010) is rich, overspilling with poems you want to return to and when you do, they reward your re-reading, revealing different and surprising layers of themselves. His imagination turns the familiar world upside down. When Tony Curtis appeared at last year’s StAnza Festival in St Andrews, the hall was packed and they ran out of his book. We are lucky to have the opportunity to hear him read in Ulverston.

Matt Cowe (right) will be playing tunes by guitar legend Chet Atkins on his new Gretsch guitar ‘Ruby’. He has loved the country-swing sounds of Chet for many years and is now proud to present a tribute to Mr. Guitar himself with a selection of favourites from the early 1950s.

Ross Baxter does the honours as MC, and there will be readings by various Poem and a Pint committee luminaries.

StAnza 2012

Tony Curtis read on 16th March at StAnza 2012. The only regular festival dedicated to poetry in Scotland, StAnza is international in outlook. Founded in 1998, it is held each March in St Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university town. The festival is an opportunity to engage with a wide variety of poetry, to hear world class poets reading in exciting and atmospheric venues, to experience a range of performances where music, film, dance and poetry work in harmony, to view exhibitions linking poetry with visual art and to discover the part poetry has played in the lives of a diverse range of writers, musicians and media personalities. The simple intention of StAnza is to celebrate poetry in all its many forms.
